MEDICAL ERRORS

The Medical Error Prevention Act of 2000 (HR 3672), introduced by Congresswoman Connie Morelli (R-MD), would protect information obtained in voluntarily reporting errors. Without HR 3672 a major barrier will continue to exist in the reporting of medical related errors. With this legislation comes the protection that information obtained through voluntary reporting would not be available in civil and administrative proceedings.

In an effort to help reduce medication errors, the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the California Hospital Association (CHA) have developed two tools to help educate staff. "Beyond Blame" is a 9 minute video depicting errors as seen through the eyes of providers involved. In Addison a Medication Errors and Improving Patient Safety publication is available for nurses and other health care providers. For more information contact the AHA at (202) 626-2960

SCOPE OF PRACTICE DECISION GUIDE

Here's a decision guide that can help you determine your scope of practice. It's adapted from a model produced by the Virginia Board of Nursing. We get lots of requests for this type of information and we thought you would find it useful.

Describe the Activity or Task

Is the activity task permitted or prohibited by nurse practice act?

QUESTION...IF YES CONTINUE TO NEXT QUESTION

NO - STOP

Is activity consistent in scope of practice, based on at least 2?
•Standard of practice of a national nursing organization
•Established policy or protocol of employing agency
•Nursing literature and/or research
•Reasonable, prudent nurse in similar circumstances.

NO-NOT WITHIN YOUR SCOPE OF PRACTICE

Do you possess the knowledge to perform the activity safely as acquired in school, CE program or structured self-study ?

NO-STOP UNTIL ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE GAINED

Do you personally possess current clinical skills to perform the activity / task in a competent, safe manner?

NO-STOP UNTIL CLINICAL SKILLS GAINED

Is performance of activity within the accepted "standard of care" that would be provided in similar circumstances by reasonable, prudent nurses with similar education, skills, and experience, consistent with established agency policies and procedures.

NO-STOP PERFORMANCE OF ACTIVITY MAY PLACE BOTH PATIENT AND NURSE AT RISK

Are you prepared to assume accountability for safe, effective nursing practice (accepting the consequences of your action)?

NO-STOP NOTIFY APPROPRIATE PERSON(S)

YOU MAY PERFORM ACTIVITY ACCORDING TO ACCEPTABLE AND PREVAILING STANDARDS OF CARE (WITH VALID ORDER AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH POLICIES AND PROCEDURES)

Nurses and Nursing What Now?
by Dr. Gloria 'Jo' Floyd at ncehs.com

It is a new millennium and nurses, as well as nursing, more and more need to be proactive and visionary. I believe that in this year we need to address several focuses. These are:

  • What should nurses and nursing stop doing?

  • What should nurses and nursing continue to do?
  • What should nurses and nursing start doing?

What would you say should be the answer to these questions if you were asked? Answer them from your perspective right now. List a minimum of five answers for each question. What do you think you would say about what we should stop, start and continue to do if put in the media spotlight now?

Stop & List Your Answers Now!

This new section to our newsletter will keep you up-to-date on Nursing at Suite101.com site. At present, we're featuring a series of articles called A Day In The Life of a Nurse. The series includes information we've gathered through on-line interviews from some of you and many others. It contains articles about hospital nursing, long-term care nursing, and home care nursing. The series started with a primer on general nursing roles and responsibilities. We invite you to drop by and read the articles, write your comments and rate each article. I also post press releases for and about nursing and related issues.

What is Suite101? It's a directory site with over 1,000 contributing editors. Each editor (myself included) is required to publish at least one article per month. We also review and rate web sites for our particular area (in my case obviously that would be nursing). You'll find anything and everything from A-Z on the Internet. And unlike many directory sites, the links are independently rated and reviewed. So you know where and what your getting from web sites before you spend the time going there.

We're looking for new members and have on-going promotions to entice your joining our family. Membership is free and has lots of great benefits including your own free home page, free e-mail account you can access from anywhere, interactive forums, expert advice and much more. Plus, if you join now, you'll be entered in our daily drawing for $100.00 cash to you plus $100.00 to the charity of your choice. What a great promotional idea don't you think? To join our community visit Nursing at Suite101.com and click on the "join" graphic about halfway down the page on the left hand side. One of my lucky members won $500.00 in our prior promotion and I'd like you to be the next winner! :-)
