The FDA and Bristol Myers Squibb issued a warning that pregnant women receiving a combination antiretroviral regimen of stavudine (Zerit) and didanosie (Videx / Videx EC) may be at risk for fatal lactic acidosis when use in combination with other antiretroviral medications. The warning comes after three fatal cases lactic acidosis were reported in pregnant women taking Zerit and Videx in combination with other HIV medications. There have also been several nonfatal occurrences of this process occurring in pregnant women. In a letter dated January 5, 2001, Bristol Myers Squibb informed clinicians of this potential problem, and recommended that the combination therapy should only be prescribed to pregnant women when the benefit clearly outweighs the potential risk. Women receiving this combination therapy should be closely monitored for lactic acidosis and liver damage, which may develop abruptly, even with normal lab values in the weeks prior to development. Healthcare providers should report adverse events to Bristol Myers Squibb (800-426-7644). Reports can be submitted to the FDA by phone (800-FDA-1088), fax (800-FDA-0178) or online at www.fda.gov/medwatch.
MedWatch, the FDA Medical Products Reporting Program, is an initiative designed both to educate all health professionals about the critical importance of being aware of, monitoring for, and reporting adverse events and problems to FDA and/or the manufacturer, and to ensure that new safety information is rapidly communicated to the medical community, thereby improving patient care. The purpose of the MedWatch program is to enhance the effectiveness of post-marketing surveillance of medical products as they are used in clinical practice and to rapidly identify significant health hazards associated with these products. As part of this service, free continuing education articles are available on-line. As of press time the following articles are available:

NEW TRAVEL NURSING BONUS Effective immediately, all nurses that complete a 13-week travel assignment based on our referral will receive a one-year subscription for unlimited CEs at RN.com. This program is funded by Nurse-Recruiter and is in addition to any bonuses offered by the travel nursing companies. It's our way of saying thank you for supporting our nurse-owned company. It has been our principal since day one to return some of our proceeds to educational opportunities for nurses. We feel nurses must realize that their education only begins upon graduation, and given the speed with which the health care knowledge base grows, it is imperative to participate regularly in continuing education opportunities. To get more details on this new bonus or to claim your subscription write to us at: Want to try an exciting career in travel nursing? Click Here!

I wanted to take just a quick a minute to apologize for some tech difficulties we experienced during the last part of November and through much of December. The mail handlers (e-mail) at our host site were not functioning for nearly three weeks. And while we worked with our host organization and provided every opportunity for them to get the situation corrected, they unfortunately were not up to the task. This resulted in our moving to a new server. The move then required that we reprogram the nearly 500 forms on our site. During this period of nearly six weeks, Nurse-Recruiter.com received very little e-mail and virtually none of the forms that were submitted from our site. If you contacted us in one way or another and did not hear back from us, please write us again. Your e-mail is very important to us and we are here to help meet your needs.
In the next few days, we will be authorizing over 50 new employers to use our free resume database service. So it's time to get yours listed free. Once a month, we will pick from one of the posted resumes a winner for one year of unlimited CEs at RN.com. Don't wait- do it while you're thinking about it. You just might be surprised at the offers you receive.
