NURSE-RECRUITER NEWS

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR THE NEW YEAR

I wanted to write you a very personal message that I hope will inspire you for the coming year and throughout your career. I have been quite distressed by the climate hanging over our profession and within our professionals. First let me tell you that I've been a nurse for nearly 25 years. I've worked med/surg, SICU, PICU, ER, a little bit of home care and most recently in long-term care. Yes, in addition to my website I still nurse full-time. So my comments are based on a little bit of knowledge of our profession.

Recently, web sites have been asking questions like: is staffing safe in your hospital (94% say no) or; are you satisfied with your profession (24.6% no). Bulletin boards with frustrated nurses leaving the industry, with very negative comments about our profession.

Let me say, there is very little wrong with our profession. The problem is the mixing of health care and business. Like all vital services, people want them, they are just not willing to pay for them. Hospitals (and their parent companies) like all big businesses cannot be satisfied with any level of profit. Shareholders demand more, more, more. They and their support companies have driven health care costs to a dangerous level. The price we pay? Increase profits by decreasing staff. It's a no brainer for business execs.

As a very young nurse, I had a terrific mentor. In the days before downsizing, UAPs (unlicensed assistive personnel) and when team nursing was the standard, she taught me that I would never meet all the needs of all the patients. That there would always be more patients needing nursing care than resources would allow. She went on to say that "you must go home happy knowing that today, you did the best you could and, that you did no harm". This is a philosophy I have carried with me throughout my career. Regardless of where I've gone or what I've done. Yes times are tough, and they are going to get tougher. But remember, do the best you can and first "do no harm".

One of my favorite people in the world teaches "what you focus on expands". If we as a profession continue to focus on all the negative aspects of our profession bad things will continue to happen. Now don't get me wrong, we must advocate, but we must do so with positive tones. The average age of a practicing nurse today is 44 years old, and getting older. If we can't find a way to spark the interest of young people, our profession as we know it will be doomed. We must not allow emotion to rule our actions. Remember that we are in this for the patients and not our own personal comforts.

This philosophy of "what you focus on expands" also applies to each of us as individuals. The teaching focuses on each of the three roles we all play...personal, social and professional. Collectively, making the individual people know us to be. Focus on the positive aspects in all three of your roles. Remain loyal to the things you believe in, focus on the good that you did today and it will make tomorrows assignment so much easier. You will find that you wear a smile more often, that you love more easily and that work becomes a more balanced part of your life.

We are part of one of the greatest professions in the world. We do what few others can. We are there when people are sick, depressed, hurting and dying. We provide for them that which they cannot provide for themselves, take pride in what you've done for mankind. Ours is the greatest calling of compassion and you will be remembered with great admiration by hundreds and hundreds of lives who you have personally and intimately touched. God bless you nurses everyone.
