INDIA: GLOBAL DUMPING GROUND FOR TOXIC WASTE
By Sanjay Kumar

NEW DELHI (Reuters Health) - More than 100,000 tons of potentially toxic waste entered India in 1998-1999, making a mockery of a ban on toxic waste imports imposed by the Indian Supreme Court in 1997, the international environmental group Greenpeace said in a press statement.

"It seems internationally India is emerging as a favorite dumping ground for toxic wastes by the west", Nityanand Jayaraman, a Greenpeace campaigner told Reuters Health.

Greenpeace compiled and analyzed data from the Indian government's own statistics, which indicate that hazardous and potentially hazardous wastes have been flooding India for years. On May 5, 1997, India's Supreme Court prohibited the imports of all hazardous wastes.

CANADA APPROVES ONCE-A-DAY ORAL DIABETIC DRUG, ACTOS

TORONTO, ON -- September 14, 2000 -- Eli Lilly Canada Inc. announced Health Canada's approval of Actos™ (pioglitazone hydrochloride), a new oral treatment that effectively manages glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Health Canada also recognized that many patients with diabetes, treated with Actos in clinical trials, exhibited improved lipid levels. Current research has proven that effective management of lipid levels in this patient group can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease - the leading cause of death among people with type 2 diabetes.

"Eighty percent of people with diabetes die of some form of heart or blood vessel disease," said Dr. Amir Hanna, Staff Endocrinologist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. "That is why a novel drug such as Actos that not only effectively treats type 2 diabetes, but may also reduce the risk of heart disease in this high-risk population, is such a powerful tool."

Actos' effect on the blood-lipid profile is unique in that it is the only oral medication for type 2 diabetes that not only effectively lowers blood glucose but also raises the good cholesterol (HDL), while lowering triglycerides and not increasing the bad cholesterol levels (LDL).

CANCER VACCINE CLOSE

Scientists believe they are close to developing a vaccine for cancer, and plan to begin trials later this year. The vaccine has proved effective on mice in stopping the growth of all cancer tumors.

The vaccine is based on gene therapy and appears to wake up the body's immune system encouraging it to attack and kill cancer tumors.

Gene Therapy Generates Angiogenesis In Heart Tissue

Scientists at Tufts University School of Medicine (Boston) are reporting significant increases in blood flow to the hearts of seriously ill patients by injecting the gene for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) into areas of dead or unresponsive heart muscle. The results, reported in the latest issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, show that the heart muscle was not dead, but merely hibernating, and that injecting the VEGF gene can stimulate angiogenesis in such areas.

"To my knowledge, this is the first study using objective findings that has demonstrated improvement in blood flow to the heart using gene therapy," says the study's senior author, Jeffrey M. Isner, professor of medicine and pathology. "There has been great concern about whether gene therapy works. This is very solid evidence that it does."

Claim Life, Liberty And The Pursuit of Happiness -
Nurses Ought To Do That...
by Dr. Gloria Jo Floyd, The Nurses Coach

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is great sounding. Look around nurses, how is your life? Had any liberty, or, pray tell, time to pursue happiness?

Think on these key American ideals. What is your nursing life like today? What kind of independence has nursing brought to you? Have you made the best of all that it has to offer?

Is nursing, for example, like the life you sought? Are you getting the on-going thrill that you thought you would? Does some other field, career or job now seem more suitable for your yearnings? Is your personal life messed up, boring, frustrating, or out of your control? If so, listen up ... You can have a better personal and/or professional life. How? Get busy and plan and claim it as there is no job or field without problems and frustrations. Just ask around and you will find this to be universally true.

There are a few quick steps, however, to getting, gaining, and claiming an improved life at work and at home. You only have to: To read the rest of Jo's article, click here.

Things I've Learned...

I've learned-
that we don't have to change friends
if we understand that friends change.

I've learned-
that no matter how good a friend is,
they're going to hurt you every
once in a while and you must forgive
  them for that.

I've learned-
that true friendship continues to grow,
  even over the longest distance.
  Same goes for true love.

I've learned-
that you can do something in an instant
that will give you heartache for life.

I've learned-
that it's taking me a long time
to become the person I want to be.

I've learned-
that you should always leave loved ones
with loving words. It may be the last
  time you see them.

I've learned-
  that you can keep going
  long after you can't.

I've learned-

HELP NEW GRADS AVOID MISTAKES

We're still looking for your input to help new grads avoid common mistakes. With hospital errors reported as the 8th leading cause of death in the U. S., the one thing expert nurses have to offer the novice is experience- including our failures and mistakes. Some examples might include:

If the valve in the lid of a suction canister gets wet, it will not suction.

The amount of "bubbling" in the pleurvac has no relationship to the degree of suction.

"I hung blood with D5 1/2 NS...just did not know better".

Pouring a little mouthwash into the bath water reduces patient odor.

Hot prune juice with breakfast helps ensure a bowel movement.

Your contributions will be shared in future articles published on several websites including but not limited to Nurse-Recruiter.com and Nursing@Suite101.com. The goal is to put all this information into a booklet form and make it available to new nurses across the nation.

Sincerely,

GETTING OUT THE VOTE
by: Pat Mahan, Nurse-Recruiter.com

With the down fall of so many long term care companies and an increasing number of acute care centers failing, it's time we nurses get out the vote. In an effort to help demonstrate our strength, the ANA is planning "Nurses Can '00". The ANA is calling for nurses throughout the U.S. to become involved by volunteering in the political campaign of your choice.

Nurses Campaign Activity Night is scheduled for October 24th. Pick any candidate you like at any level of government, volunteer and be sure to identify yourself as a nurse.

We applaud the ANA for this great activity and we will promote this program through all our Internet resources. But more importantly, you must vote!. We have become too apathetic and our industry is in crisis. Of even more concern, our profession may be on the verge extinction. With the declining enrollments in nursing programs (down five consecutive years) and the ever increasing age of practicing nurses (less than 10% are under 30), we are seeing more and more professional nursing replacements trying to "take up the slack". As we have read time and again, when you take an unlicensed assertive person and have them fill the position of an RN, negative outcomes are realized.

You must find out how the local, state and federal politicians stand on the subject of health care and if they have plans to help solve the nursing crisis. Have they even thought about it? Then vote, and encourage all your colleagues to do the same. This may be the most important political year of our careers, don't let it slip by.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE LPNs GONE

I have a question? Why are hospitals using UAPs (Unlicensed Assertive Personnel) and not LPNs? I'd love to hear your feedback on the subject. This seems like a natural place to turn in times like these. No they're not RNs, but their training far exceeds that of a UP, they are licensed by the state to meet minimum competency levels.

Be sure to indicate in your note if I can publish your response and the type of credit(s) you want applied (such as your name, company, web address, e-mail, etc.). Send to info@nurse-recruiter.com.
